Joe Cheves was head pro at Mimosa Hills from 1951-1981. He's a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the Carolina PGA and Carolinas Golf Halls of Fame. Cheves, who passed away on July 31st, 2007, at age 89, loved Mimosa Hills with all his heart and soul. He was a strong advocate and supporter of junior golfers for 70 years. The idea of a junior tournament was presented to the Mimosa Hills Board of Directors in February 2003 and they unanimously endorsed the tournament. The only thing the Board insisted was that the official name of this event be: The Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills.
The JCJI was conceived to not just be another junior golf tournament. It's not a first-come, first-served entry process. The concept was to hold an event that players had to earn their way to play. In essence, bringing together an elite field. A set of qualifying criteria was formed with help from the Carolinas Golf Association and the Tarheel Youth Golf Association.
